On July 23 2026, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced sanctions against a senior Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood (EMB) official, three other individuals, and three entities that have provided material support to HAMAS.
Speaking about the OFAC sanctions, Secretary Bessent declared that “The Trump Administration will relentlessly pursue terrorists and those who finance them . . . [w]hether operating under the guise of charities, businesses, or underground financial networks, those who enable Hamas will be exposed, sanctioned, and held accountable.”
This marks the latest action by the Trump administration to go after the international Muslim Brotherhood’s ongoing financial material support to designated terrorist organizations such as HAMAS.
It was in November 2025 that President Donald Trump first launched the official process to designate various international Muslim Brotherhood groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs) with Executive Order 14362.
These new OFAC measures against Muslim Brotherhood front groups, including financial networks and “sham charities,” now build on earlier actions taken in January and March 2026.
In January 2026, OFAC sanctioned Egyptian, Jordanian, and Lebanese branches of the Muslim Brotherhood as Specially Designated Global Terrorists for their support of HAMAS.
Also in early 2026, the U.S. State Department named the Lebanese chapter to its Foreign Terrorist Organization list and sanctioned its secretary-general, Muhammad Fawzi Taqqosh.
According to the 23 July 2026 Press Release from the Department of the Treasury, OFAC designated Mahmoud al-Abyari, a UK-based senior leader of the EMB, a group that was itself designated a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in January 2026.
According to Mariam Wahba, writing on 24 July 2026 at Israpundit, Al-Abyari serves as secretary general of the Muslim Brotherhood’s General Secretariat and is the editor-in-chief of Risalat al-Ikhwan, the organization’s weekly publication.
Two HAMAS fundraising “charities” – Tujah Bulah Global in Indonesia and the Gaza-based Madad Palestine Charitable Society – were designated for providing material support to HAMAS.
Additionally, a Turkey-based operation, El-Kahira for General Trading, and its owner and shareholders were designated likewise for providing material support to HAMAS.
Under the enforcement measures of these sanctions, “all property and interests in property of the designated individuals and entities within U.S. jurisdiction are blocked, and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with them.”
The Trump administration’s campaign to target the Muslim Brotherhood in its longtime safehavens in Europe aims to dismantle the Brotherhood’s overall global support network of front organizations that include a façade of so-called “charities,” financial institutions, and media outlets.
It is this network that, while not committing actual terrorism itself, enables the kinetic jihad of groups like Hamas.
As the U.S. continues to tighten the screws on this Brotherhood support network, enforcement mechanisms that constrain its finances are intended to exert a major impact not only on the Brotherhood’s ability to operate internationally, but eventually the ability of Hamas itself to continue its terrorist activities.
In the wake of the 2008 conviction of the U.S.-based Holy Land Foundation and its top leadership figures on material support to terrorism charges, the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood network of front groups – listed in the court proceedings as “Unindicted Co-Conspirators” – drew back from obvious (and illegal) direct financial support to Hamas (the Gazan branch of the Muslim Brotherhood).
That extensive network of U.S.-based front groups that were listed among the case’s Unindicted Co-Conspirators did not simply dissolve, however.
Rather, they turned their focus to subversive activities that have infiltrated across American society and its institutions, from academia, to faith groups, government at every level, and the media.
Most recently, and startlingly in the wake of the Oct. 7, 2023, Shabbat massacre of Israelis by Gazan terrorists, increasingly open support for Islamic jihad among electoral candidates and elected officials at every level has jolted establishment political party leaderships, especially within the Democratic Party, where the Democratic Socialists of America have dozens of members.
This open (albeit opportunistic) alignment between the Red (communist/Marxist) and the Green (Islam) perhaps once thought unlikely has come to characterize a dangerous and growing challenge to the Constitutional Republic established these 250 years ago by our Founding Fathers.
It is therefore encouraging to see the Trump administration’s commitment to targeting the Muslim Brotherhood as well as to hear President Trump in speeches at Mt. Rushmore and Independence Day observances in Washington, D.C. repeatedly call out communism as “a loser . . . the enemy of free people everywhere, everywhere in the world . . . ”
Understanding how the two – the Red and the Green – are at least for now aligned in mutual hatred of Western Civilization, Israel, and the U.S. must be the guiding insight for a policy committed to preserving the foundational principles of our Republic.
