A single dose of the drug was supposed to slow, if not halt, the transmission of the HIV/AIDS virus from mother to child. The trial was carried out in Uganda between 1997 and 2002 when it was placed on a 15-month suspension. Several audits then revealed the myriad ways in which the trial was compromised through negligent research practices and then a cover-up by Dr. Fauci and his staff. The clinical trial was run was overseen by Fauci’s office, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), Division of AIDS (DAIDS).
